Users who create templates in Outlook 2010 are discovering that the resulting messages are converted to plain text when sent using a SMTP server. (Users with Exchange servers are not affected.)
We have two solutions until this bug is fixed. I think the easiest fix is to save the design as Stationery instead of a template. The first time its used, select it from New Items, Email Message using… More Stationery but after that it will be listed at the top of the New Items, Email Message using… flyout. If you need to use a template, set the contact to always use rich text.
If you save the design as stationery, you’ll need to save it in HTML format in the Stationery folder under your user account so it will be listed in the Stationery picker. An easy way to access this folder when saving the template is to type %appdata% in the filename field and press Enter then browse to the Microsoft\Stationery folder.
Would you like to print a “monthly” calendar that runs mid-month to mid-next-month? Begin by adjusting the monthly calendar so it displays the first week you want printed at the top of the screen.
Next, open the print dialog. If you see a full month in print preview, go to Page setup (under Print Options in Outlook 2010) and uncheck the option to print exactly one month per page.
Verify the desired start date is in the Print range: Start field (on Page Setup dialog in older versions; on Print options in Outlook 2010).
In older versions, you’ll always print 5 weeks; in Outlook 2010, you’ll print either 5 or 6 weeks, depending on the length of the current month. You can sometimes force Outlook to print 5 weeks: before opening the print dialog, either select a month that displays in 5 weeks then scroll up or down until the desired first week is displayed at the top of the screen or select 5 weeks in the navigation calendar. In my experience, its not foolproof and I can print 5 weeks about half the time. The rest of the time, you’re stuck with a 6 week calendar.
We see a few complaints about a problem with Contacts updating from the GAL:
“My personal contacts are being updated with information in the GAL. I have a personal contact for another person that is in the GAL and it has slightly different information than is in the GAL but Outlook synchronized this contact information with the GAL and replaced the information in the contact with what is in the GAL. I never clicked on the “Update” button in the Contact ribbon, so is Outlook automatically doing this?”
This is a feature of Outlook’s Social Connector (aka the People Pane) – there is an option to update contacts and its enabled by default.
When it’s enabled, changes will be updated in the Contact with a “Details Changed” note added to the Notes field, at the end of any notes already in the Notes field.
To disable, go to People Pane button and select Account Settings to open the Social Connector settings, then click the Settings button to open the Update dialog.
Screenshots of the notes field and of the dialog are posted at http://www.outlook-tips.net/howto/contact_updates.htm
This should be the last tip (for a long time) on the subject of Outlook 2010’s change in behavior with editable attachments. Last week I mentioned some VBA you can use if you need to edit an attachment and save it back to the message. Someone discovered an easier method: open the message, put it into edit mode then open the attachment and edit.
For easiest access to the Edit Message command, add it to the QAT. If you need help with this, instructions and a video tutorial are here: http://www.slipstick.com/outlook/ol2010/readonly_attach.asp
Also – following up to an earlier tip about BCM 2010, users who need it can download it from

We’re seeing complaints from users with the forced upgrade to the Outlook Hotmail Connector.
Begin with basic troubleshooting steps, including the following:
1. Reboot the computer after installation
2. Uninstall and reinstall the connector
3. Remove the account from your profile and recreate it after restarting Outlook
If it’s still not working, we recommend opening a support incident with Microsoft to investigate this problem further. Go to http://support.microsoft.com/ph/14864#tab0 and click the link under Get Help Now. If you need to enter a Product ID, enter the Product ID from Outlook, not the Connector.
If you’re using Outlook 2000 and install iTunes 10, Outlook may not open. You’ll need to uninstall iTunes or find and rename OutlookChangeNotifierAddIn.dll.

I recently had a question about Outlook 2010′s Group Schedules: “When I try to look at schedules in Outlook 2010 it tells me “More than 30 calendars cannot be viewed at once” so is there some other way I can set this up so that we have the same functionality when we upgrade to Outlook 2010? “
I recently learned of a registry change you can make to allow more group schedules (up to 100). You can do this using the group policy templates or edit the registry directly.
To edit the registry directly, open the registry editor and browse to the follow key. If it does not exist, you’ll need to create it.
HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Office\14.0\Outlook\Options\Calendar
If the DWORD CalendarMaximumNumber does not exist, create it. Modify the value to a multiple of 10, up to 100.
Earlier this week, Microsoft released hotfixes for both Outlook 2007 and Outlook 2010. The Outlook 2007 hotfix fixes word wrapping in calendar print outs, which was broken by the July update, however, this update does not restore the end times to the print out.
A complete list of the issues addressed by the Outlook 2007 hotfixes is described in the following KB Articles

We see a lot of users who decide to upgrade only Outlook, not the full office suite. While this is the least expensive method, those who do this often discover the features they upgraded to get are available only when they install the Office suite. Also, installing the Home and Student suite and standalone Outlook doesn’t equal a suite. You need to install a suite that includes Outlook to get the missing features.
Specifically, some spelling and grammar features, including autocorrect, are available only when you have an Office suite. You’ll be able to spell check on send or with F7, but spell check as you type and autocorrect aren’t available. Themes and stationery are missing in standalone Outlook too.
The new Screenshot feature, along with ClipArt, SmartArt, Shapes, and Chart also require the full suite.
If you are considering upgrading only Outlook, review the chart at
Using Outlook 2010 with or without Word 2010 installed

Some Outlook 2010 users are having ‘issues’ with Outlook’s new ‘default’ account behavior when multiple accounts are delivered to different data files. Outlook uses the email address assigned to the data file you are currently working in as the default for new mail. This is creating problems for IMAP users who have POP3 accounts delivered to the default *.pst (which is required for IMAP accounts) when they want the IMAP account used as the default for sending.
Someone wrote a macro that always uses the default account. (Outlook 2010 Macro to use the Default Account ) Or you can add or edit a registry key to force the user to select an account every time they send a new message. (Replies and Forwards always use the account the message arrived on.) This will also work for people who multiple accounts and frequently accidently send using the wrong account.
