Go ahead use App-V, no really, please…

It might seem odd to some of you that Citrix would make such a statement given that we have made application isolation and streaming capabilities available in the XenApp platform ever since the introduction of Presentation Server 4.5 over 3 years ago. The fact is that Citrix has always intended to embrace App-V within our XenApp systems, a point that I have often stated, even as early as when Pete Schulz and I were presenting the pre-release hands-on training for Project Tarpon (the project name for what would become XenApp application streaming) as far back as 2006. Regardless, there are always questions posed by customers and prospects who are left wondering which solution to use, and when. The answer is "both", let me explain...

Application Virtualization in XenApp:

Application Virtualization within the greater context of Citrix On-demand application delivery is the system that enables a) Single Image Application Management, and b) Offline access to centrally managed applications. Within the Application Virtualization capabilities, both XenApp Isolation and Streaming as well as Microsoft App-V are considered equally capable technologies, either of which can be managed within XenApp based upon a customer's application delivery requirements. So what in earlier versions of XenApp was a Citrix only technology known as "application streaming" is now in XenApp 6 a broader "Application Virtualization" delivery system, consisting of 5 components/technologies.

         Publishing and Management infrastructure (AppCenter)

         Application Isolation

         Application Streaming

         Receiver plug-ins (Citrix Receiver)

         Self-service enterprise app store (Dazzle)

In XenApp Application Virtualization an app can be packaged as either a XenApp .profile or a Microsoft App-V sequence, either of which enables items 2 and 3 in the list above, that being isolation and streaming. These packages are then made available to users through the central XenApp publishing and management infrastructure (item 1 in the list) where various properties and policies are configured to determine if, or how, a given application is delivered to a user based on who they are, what device they are using, over what network, etc...

There are 2 Citrix Receiver plug-ins required for a complete solution with regards to XenApp and App-V, one is the Citrix Offline Plug-in, and the other is the App-V Plug-in for Citrix Receiver.

And rounding out the complete Application Virtualization delivery system is the 5th item in the list Citrix Dazzle, our Self-service enterprise application storefront.

In this system, both App-V and the native isolation and streaming capabilities within XenApp provide virtually the same technical solution, but with a couple of idiosyncrasies that may make one or the other the more appropriate choice for a given application. A perfect example of this would be illustrated in the considerations for rolling out Microsoft Office 2010 as a virtualized application. With the introduction of the Office 2010 deployment kit for App-V, Microsoft is bridging the boundaries between virtualized Office and the role Office has taken on as a common element in many traditional desktop deployments; deployments where a large number of applications rely on Microsoft Office almost as much as they do the underlying OS. A few examples of the unique capabilities enabled by App-V and the Office 2010 Deployment Kit for App-V are:

Fast search in virtualized Outlook 2010 using Windows Desktop Search

Ability for virtualized Office 2010 applications to open, edit, and save Office files hosted with Windows SharePoint

Search indexing support for Office file types

URL protocol redirection to virtualized Outlook 2010

         Print to virtualized OneNote 2010

But the biggest advantage to using App-V to deliver Office 2010 is "Single vendor support for the application as well as the application virtualization technology".

With many of the challenges around delivering virtualized applications that will rely on Office 2010 as a central enabling component, coupled with the "single throat to choke" advantage of having the application virtualization technology vendor be the same vendor that is supplying the application itself, in my opinion, it just makes good sense to use Microsoft App-V as the preferred app virtualization solution for that application suite.

Often after I walk a prospect through this particular scenario we immediately jump into the "Is Citrix ending its development of their native application virtualization capabilities and going with App-V instead?" item on the agenda. J The answer here is "No".

The Citrix vision of enabling simple and secure anywhere access is built on many technologies, application virtualization is only one of these building blocks, but it is a critical element of delivering the best user experience to any user on any device while also simplifying the management of the applications. And that is not only why we will continue to innovate across our broader application virtualization solution, for our native isolation and streaming, as well as better and more deeply integrated support for App-V over time, but it is also why Microsoft and our mutual customers see value in Citrix delivering App-V sequences through XenApp. Which leads me to the last and final question I have heard over the last few years and that is "Why would Citrix want to support App-V, and what does XenApp enable me to do with App-V that I can't do otherwise"?

Great question!

Simply put, Citrix is always looking for new ways to leverage Microsoft platform elements to enable new scenarios for our mutual customers, App-V is just one of example of a new element we will be leveraging in future release of XenApp and XenDesktop. As I said at the beginning of this post, we have intended to partner around App-V from the start of project Tarpon, today we are delivering the first incarnation of that intent. As far as what unique value does XenApp enable for App-V, let's look at a couple of examples available today.

Publish App-V packages directly from XenApp as "Dual-mode" applications

Through our new App-V integration, Microsoft App-V sequences can be published using the same workflows and wizards as all other applications managed through XenApp. Admins can leverage native XenApp Application Virtualization and Session Virtualization configuration parameters and policies to make Microsoft App-V sequences available for online and offline use. Dual-mode fallback is also provided, enabling end-points to access App-V applications from a consistent interface, even if the device is incapable of running the application locally, for example when a user needs to access the application from a Mac PowerBook or iPhone.

Manage App-V client plug-in using Citrix Receiver

The Microsoft Application Virtualization Desktop Client can now be managed and delivered as a plug-in for Citrix Receiver. With XenApp, App-V sequences can now be delivered to lightly-managed endpoint scenarios, even if the end-point is not a member of the Microsoft Active Directory domain. As a result, new App-V use cases and access scenarios are enabled, including the delivery of applications to a consultant or for companies with "Bring your own computer" (BYOC) initiatives.

Subscribe to App-V packages using Citrix Dazzle

With Citrix Receiver, users gain self-service access to applications through an enterprise app storefront. Admins can advertise App-V packages with all other XenApp published applications and services for easy, on-demand access by users. There are many more exciting things in the Citrix/Microsoft partnering and integration pipelines that we will be sharing over the coming months, all of which complement the trajectory we have begun with the XenDesktop 4 and now this XenApp 6 release on Windows Server 2008 R2. I definitely encourage you to check out XenApp 6 and begin considering the new possibilities this platform can enable in your on-demand application delivery and hosted shared desktop initiatives.

Can You Reduce Travel Costs with Web Conferencing?

There's an interesting debate going on about the value of online meetings and web conferencing compared to face-to-face in-person meetings. Airlines don't want always want airport visitors to see the "Next Time Meet Online" GoToMeeting ads. And Hyatt is defending business travel.

This is a false choice. Of course, face-to-face meetings are great. The question is are there situations where the benefit of saving time and travel costs outweighs the value of meeting in person? Can you sell to a wider audience? Train people more easily? Attend more productive meetings? Employ (or retain) people in more locations? And, if so, how much time and travel costs do you save exactly? What's the ROI on online meeting tools?

Here's a new graph from our finance dept correlating increased use of GoToMeeting and GoToWebinar at Citrix and decreasing travel cost per employee.

In this example, the $150 savings is a roughly 3X return compared to the cost of a GoToMeeting license, but reduced travel isn't the only benefit of online meetings.
For instance, a greater benefit for us is simply including a GoToMeeting link in all on-site meetings. That way people can join from other offices, their home, wherever they happen to be, even if it's just down to road.

From marketing, to sales, to service, to training, HR, engineering -- what's remarkable is how impactful online meeting tools are across the organization on everyday productivity. It takes time, but usage grows and they become habitual and indispensable. It is becoming a competitive disadvantage to not use them.

One caveat to that is that if you have a web conferencing solution but people don't use it widely (because it's not easy, not reliable or otherwise problematic) than you are missing out on the benefits. The key is usage.

Tip 719: Disable the Junk email filter

Warning! This registry hack will disable the Junk email filter in Outlook 2007 and 2010, including the blocked list, and disable the Junk email options button.
The ‘no automatic filtering’ setting in Outlook’s Junk email options disables the junk email filter but continues to apply the blocked senders list to incoming email. Some users complain that the filter continues to work after setting it to no automatic filtering and with the blocked list empty. This registry hack will completely disable Outlook’s built in filtering. It will not affect third party spam filters.

Go to the following key (use 14.0 if you use Outlook 2010) – if the key does not exist, add it.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\office\12.0\outlook
And add:
DWord: DisableAntiSpam
Value: 1 (Hex)
Value of 1 disables the junk filter, 0 enables it.

You need to restart Outlook for it take effect. The Junk email folder will remain (but should not be created if you make a new default pst file) – you can delete the junk folder using OutlookSpy or MFCMAPI.

You can also disable RSS: see http://www.outlook-tips.net/archives/2008/20080829.htm

Rate Me; Rank Me; Lose Me

Periodically, a reader's question has universal appeal and application so I am sharing both the question and my response. How would you respond to Beth's question?

Reader's Question: I work for a large corporation that has a performance management system where only a certain percentage of people can get the highest ratings. Two years in a row, my manager (and her manager) have agreed that I should receive an "Exceeds Expectations". This rating is associated with a higher raise and a higher bonus amount.

Two years in a row, this rating recommendation was downgraded by those above them to "Achieves Expectations". I was told this wasn't personal; it's just the numbers. (Susan adds: In similar systems, only a certain percentage of employees can rank in each numeric rating category.)

I work in a sales environment where the top sales people automatically get the highest ratings. I also don't report directly to the VP (and I assume those who do have an easier job of getting the rating they deserve). My reviews both years were glowing. Written on them were my manager's comments that she recommended I receive an "Exceeds Expectations" rating. Two years in a row, it was downgraded.

I feel very badly about working for a company with this type of performance appraisal system. When I asked my manager what more I could do to get to keep the rating they submitted for me, she told me, "nothing." There is nothing more she can do either. She can't get blood from a stone.

As an employee, I cannot see any benefit for a company in having a system like this. If someone does have good people, they should be able to rate them as such. If they have many good people, then all the power to them. The good people should be rated accordingly and they've done their job as hiring managers well.

Are there other companies with this type of system that you know of (this is my first experience with this)? Why do they have systems like this? How would you go on being the top performer, that you know you are, when the rating system is so unfair? Any words of wisdom would be appreciated.

My Response: If you read through my materials on performance appraisal and ranking systems, you know that I totally disagree with them. They are a method used by companies to contain costs and falsely limit the availability of high ratings, a practice of which I also disapprove.

Philosophically, proponents of such a system, which usually includes a percentage factor that specifies the percentage of employees who may attain each rating, would argue that it makes performance raters more discerning. Only exceptional employees are highest rated and unexceptional employees fall to the bottom of the rankings.

They might also say that such a system makes certain that true differentiation of performance is expected and rewarded. (As a new proponent of rating and ranking, one 30,000 employee division of a large corporation found that 96% of its employees had received the highest rating prior to the new system which divided level of rating by: 10% - exceptional, 15% - exceeds expectations, 60% - meets expectations and 15% - below expectations.)

I don't know what more I can say. Many companies do this, to their detriment, in my opinion. All I can suggest to you, since you don't appear to be in a position to affect the performance appraisal system, is that you stealth job search to find a company that lets your obviously many talents and contributions be rewarded as they deserve.

Consider talking with your manager about using more specific and quantifiable examples of your contributions and efforts on the appraisal document - the piece I have often observed is missing - in a competitive employee ranking exercise.

If your company has a method for soliciting employee input, you might give yours about this performance appraisal process. But, if your manager is unable to impact the final decisions, in competition with all of the other managers for their employees, there is not much more that you can do.

I am going to post this question anonymously on my site to see if we get any other feedback. Your thoughts?

Understanding Write-Cache in Provisioning Server (http://support.citrix.com/article/CTX119469)

安装后启动它，默认应该是From：本机，To：Provisioning Services vDisk。

Accelerated SSO SSLVPN Access to XenDesktop

Introduction

How often have you found that there is a lot of "How To" or run-book style documentation out there, but none of them seem to completely address the combination of your requirements? And while you have expertise in one or more product areas, have you found that making the pieces work together seems challenging sometimes?

I ran into such an example not too long ago. I had to configure an Access Gateway SSL VPN to a XenDesktop environment, accelerate the traffic, and support Single Sign On. There was not a comprehensive document out there that I could leave behind with the customer.

So I took a different approach. Rather than create an exhaustive document, I just listed the steps and referenced only the specific sections in existing product documentation, knowledge base documents, and some custom information.

For my specific project needs, (User/AGEE PlugIn/Repeater PlugIn > NetScaler AGEE > Repeater > XenDesktop) I came up with the following set of instructions that I left behind with the customer.

Step One - Create the XenDesktop Environment

I, personally, was OK with setting this up. Otherwise I would have used the Evaluating XenDesktop section (Section 4) of the XenDesktop product documentation available from the Citrix eDocs site. This can be retrieved from http://support.citrix.com/proddocs/index.jsp and selecting XenDesktop.

Step Two - Install the Citrix Repeater

To insert the Citrix Repeater into the data flow, I simply performed the steps outlined in the Citrix Repeater Quick Installation Guide. This document comes with the product, or can be downloaded from the Citrix product download site(http://citrix.com/English/ss/downloads/index.asp in my case.

One note was that on the second page of this guide, the "Gateway" address referred to is the default gateway that is used by the management dialogs - not the default gateway for user traffic.

Then I added the licenses to the Repeater. The licensing process is driven by the "License Host ID" that is shown in the Repeater Management GUI. I found the details of this procedure in the Citrix Branch Repeater Licensing Guide, which was part of the product documentation set I downloaded.

Lastly, I set up the Signaling IP address. This is the Repeater-hosted IP address that the client-based repeater plug-in-in connects to in order to establish acceleration with the repeater appliance. This is discussed on page 7-84 of the Citrix Branch Repeater Family Installation and User's Guide document available from the product download section of the Citrix web site. This IP address is set in the Repeater GUI > Configure Settings > WANScaler Client panel. Note that this Signaling-IP must be enabled in the menu as well.

Step Three - Configure the NetScaler Access Gateway

In this step, I added the configuration elements to the NetScaler Access Gateway such that it would allow the Repeater to optimize the traffic to the XenDesktop infrastructure behind it. I used the instructions in the "Turbocharge Access Gateway" document which is available for download from: http://support.citrix.com/article/CTX121035.

Since I was using NetScaler Access Gateway Enterprise Edition, I used only Section 7 for the details of how this is done.

Section 9 of this handy document pertains to customizing the Repeater Client software - used at the remote user's laptop, etc. - in order to pre-populate the signaling IP address. In volumes, this is good to do for ease of distribution. Because mine was a simple, limited-user configuration, I chose to let the user customize the parameter after installing the Repeater Plugin.msi (from the Citrix product download site(http://citrix.com/English/ss/downloads/index.asp in my case) on their own.

Then they simply do the following:

• Open the Receiver and right click the Acceleration Plug-in in the list.
• Selecting Manage Acceleration will present a menu to specify the Signaling-IP address.

Also, since my configuration goes straight to the XenDesktop system and not to a landing page, updating the NavUI home page as discussed on page 25 in the above document, was not required.

Lastly, because the acceleration traffic policy set above breaks the Single Sign On process, I needed another Access Gateway Traffic Policy. This traffic policy causes Repeater-specific optimization to be bypassed for all http traffic sent to the XenDesktop Desktop Delivery Controller.

I simply repeated the steps on pages 18-19, but using SSO-Policy and SSO-Profile. The specific overrides will include:

• Policy -> DestIP == <IP address of DDC> Netmask 255.255.255.255
• Profile-> Protocol = HTTP; WanScaler = OFF

Then I bound the two policies to the Traffic section in the Virtual Server's Policies tab. There I made sure that the exclusion policy is set to a higher priority (lower numeric value) than that of the generalized traffic policy. This causes optimization to be turned OFF for http (the SSO traffic) requests to the Desktop Delivery Controller only.

Acceleration is performed, however for all other (TCP) traffic to the rest of the subnet because this traffic does not match the criteria of the first policy in the list.

Summary

In following the above steps, I quickly created a configuration which authenticated and accelerated user traffic to the XenDesktop virtualized environment.

Furthermore, using the Repeater Plug-in dialogs, the user can see the actual acceleration realized.
